
Elsa Simon, taken by Olivier Lalin In Tapachula, Mexico, Elsa Simón Ortega, above, is holding a letter certifying employment for an ex-prostitute. Simón Ortega is the director of the non-profit Program for the Progress of Women, which helps women victims of domestic abuse, rape, and battery. According to Simón Ortega, many of the women in her program are Central American migrants. Her program has helped 300 women legalize their immigration status, 16 women to get out of prostitution, and 280 to escape from violent domestic situations. “Here we give them affection. We help them to feel that they are loved and we offer psychological help.”
